Cape Cod Healthcare is Helping Create a World with Less Cancer and More Birthdays through the American Cancer Society Relay For LifeĀ®

(May 2, 2012, Hyannis) Cape Cod Healthcare is taking another step in helping to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by serving as sponsor for the 2012 American Cancer Society Relay For Life events across Cape Cod and the Islands.

Relay For Life brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, faith-based groups - people from all walks of life – all aimed at furthering the American Cancer Society’s efforts to save lives.  Relays are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at an athletic track, park or other gathering area, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times.

“At Cape Cod Healthcare, we care deeply about our community’s health,” said Michael K. Lauf, President and CEO of Cape Cod Healthcare. “We work closely with numerous community partners, including the American Cancer Society, to deliver the highest quality health services to our families, friends and neighbors, and we are committed to doing our part to make our communities healthier. Cape Cod Healthcare offers a comprehensive system of clinical excellence in oncology services, and our relationship with the American Cancer Society and its Relay For Life events is an important part of the program. We are proud to be a sponsor of Relay For Life and to be associated with such a worthwhile cause.”

2012 Relay For Life events on Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard include:
• Lower Cape - May 18 & 19 at Nauset Regional Middle School in Orleans
• Martha’s Vineyard - June 1 & 2 at Martha’s Vineyard High School
• Mid Cape - June 15 & 16 at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School in Yarmouth
• Upper Cape - June 22 & 23 at the Barnstable County Fairgrounds in Falmouth

“We are deeply grateful for the support Cape Cod Healthcare is providing to our Relay For Life events on Cape Cod and the Islands,” said Amanda Starkel, Area Director of Development with the American Cancer Society.  “They are a dedicated supporter working alongside the American Cancer Society in the fight to end cancer.”

Funds raised at Relay For Life events enable the American Cancer Society to impact the lives of those touched by cancer within the community by supporting vital, cutting-edge cancer research; providing cancer patients with services, such as transportation to treatment, free lodging at our Hope Lodge and round-the-clock support at our national cancer information center available at 1-800-227-2345; publishing lifesaving literature on cancer prevention, detection and tobacco control; and developing a new generation of medicines that help those battling cancer.

About the American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing $3.6 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year. To learn more about us or to get help, call us any time, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345 or visit
