Cape Hospitals Earn National Patient Safety Recognition
(Hyannis, June 11, 2012) – Cape Cod Healthcare is pleased to announce that Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth Hospital have earned a national distinction for excellence in patient safety, as documented in national patient safety measures. The two hospitals received an “A,” the highest grade available, in The Leapfrog Group’s patient safety rating program.
More than 2,600 hospitals across the United States were issued a Hospital Safety Score, when the results were announced earlier this month. The Hospital Safety Score grades hospitals on how safe they are for patients. Each score, ranging from A to F, is derived from expert analysis of publicly available data on rates of infections, injuries and errors. The scores for each hospital are available at www.HospitalSafetyScore.org.
“As an A-graded hospital, you are to be congratulated for your commitment to keeping patients safe and for making critical safety information available to healthcare consumers through your participation in national performance measurement and public reporting programs,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group in a letter announcing the hospital’s grade.
Calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group’s nine-member Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 26 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from infections, injuries and medical and medication errors. The panel includes: John Birkmeyer (University of Michigan), Ashish Jha (Harvard University), Lucian Leape (Harvard University), Arnold Millstein (Stanford University), Peter Pronovost (Johns Hopkins University), Patrick Romano (University of California, Davis), Sara Singer (Harvard University), Tim Vogus (Vanderbilt University) and Robert Wachter (University of California, San Francisco).
“At Cape Cod Healthcare, we are committed to providing quality, safe care to our patients. So, it is very gratifying when we receive independent confirmation from such a reputable source as The Leapfrog Group that we are making progress toward our goals,” said Cape Cod Healthcare president and CEO Michael K. Lauf. “The Leapfrog Group shares our commitment to provide our community with the information they need, before they enter one of our hospitals.”
