CCHC Receives Major Grant from Yawkey Foundation II

Cape Cod Healthcare is pleased to announce that it has received a $3 million grant from the Yawkey Foundation to benefit the emergency center expansion and renovation projects at Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth Hospital.
In appreciation of this generous grant - on the occasion of Falmouth Hospital’s 50th birthday this summer - CCHC announced that the Falmouth Hospital’s ER will be named the “Yawkey Emergency Center,” when the new facility is completed in 2015.
The Yawkey Foundation was established by the late Tom and Jean Yawkey. Known for their longtime ownership of the Boston Red Sox, the Yawkeys were committed throughout their lifetime to helping those most in need.
“The Yawkeys’ devotion to helping people most in need is legendary, and Cape Cod Healthcare shares this same commitment by improving the lives of our neighbors through better access to top-quality healthcare,” said Michael Lauf, President and CEO of Cape Cod Healthcare. “We are genuinely humbled and immensely grateful to the Foundation’s Trustees, who recognized the value of our emergency centers to the residents of and visitors to Cape Cod, and awarded us this generous grant. This is truly a special day for Cape Cod Healthcare and the Cape Cod community.”
Yawkey Foundation President and Trustee James P. Healey said Cape Cod Healthcare’s emergency center projects were a perfect fit for the Foundation’s grant program.
“The Trustees of the Yawkey Foundation are delighted to provide this grant to two such worthy projects,” he said. “Throughout their lives, Tom and Jean Yawkey had a special place in their hearts for those most in need, and they would be proud that their legacy includes helping to support increased access to quality healthcare for all of the people who live in and visit this beautiful part of the country.”
The Emergency Centers at Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth Hospital are among the busiest in New England during the summer months. Combined, they treat more than 133,000 patients annually, despite each having been designed for half the number of patients they see every year. The emergency department at CCH was last updated in 1993 to accommodate up to 55,000 annual patient visits. Last year, patient volume in the center reached an all-time high of 92,100. The emergency department at FH was last updated in 1998 and built to handle 25,000 visits per year. In 2012, patient volume exceeded 41,000.
Despite the high volumes and cramped conditions, both ERs consistently rank among the highest in the country in patient satisfaction rates and consistently have short wait times on average. Ninety percent of CCH and FH ER patients are in a room within 25 minutes of arrival.
The new emergency centers will each be nearly double their current size and will significantly improve patient comfort, access and flow, and will enhance the environment for emergency caregivers.
The total expansion and renovation cost for both emergency centers is $32 million: $20.4 million for CCH and $11.5 million for FH. Philanthropy will play a critical part in the funding of these two capital projects, and, to date, $12.8 million has been donated.
The $3 million grant awarded to CCHC from the Yawkey Foundation will enhance the delivery of emergency care services across the Cape by supporting both the Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth Hospital emergency center projects.
