Lorusso Foundation Supports Emergency Center Expansion Projects
The Lyndon Paul Lorusso Foundation has awarded a $2 million grant to benefit Cape Cod Healthcare’s Emergency Centers Campaign. The expansion and renovation projects at Falmouth Hospital and Cape Cod Hospital will each receive $1 million from the grant.
The gift was recently presented to Cape Cod Healthcare President and CEO Michael Lauf by Mark Thompson, chairman of the Lyndon Paul Lorusso Foundation, and Paul Lorusso, Foundation Trustee and nephew of the late Paul and Lilia Lorusso.
Paul and Lilia Lorusso and the Lyndon Paul Lorusso Foundation have collectively contributed more than $8.1 million to CCHC since 1975. The Lorussos’ relationship with CCHC goes back to 1960 when Mr. Lorusso was a member of the Cape Cod Hospital Board of Trustees. In 1979, he chaired the capital campaign, and, in 1992, the Lorussos made the lead gift to the hospital’s previous Emergency Center expansion campaign.
“The Lyndon Paul Lorusso Foundation and Paul and Lilia Lorusso have been staunch supporters of Cape Cod Healthcare for more than 30 years, and we will continue to be strong supporters for years to come,” said Mr. Thompson. “Paul was very proud of Cape Cod Hospital’s Lyndon Paul Lorusso Emergency Center, and he would be delighted to know that the Foundation now has the opportunity to help with the much-needed remodeling of the emergency centers at both of the Cape’s hospitals.”
The Lorussos’ giving over the years was motivated by the memory of their son, Lyndon, who died at the age of 17. It was their wish that Lyndon’s memory live on through their individual charitable efforts and that of the Foundation’s. In addition to the emergency department, past support for CCHC included projects and programs such as Cardiac Care and Oncology Services, the Mugar Building inpatient addition at CCH, and physician recruitment efforts.
“Cape Cod Healthcare would not be the top-quality organization that it is today without Paul and Lilia’s generosity and commitment over the years,” said Mr. Lauf. “Their legacy lives on through their Foundation, which has once again stepped up to make sure the Cape Cod community is served by modern, state-of-the-art, dignified emergency centers at both Falmouth Hospital and Cape Cod Hospital. We are extremely grateful for this gift and are dedicated to building two ERs that will make the Lorusso Foundation - and the residents of Cape Cod - proud.”
Cape Cod Healthcare’s Emergency Centers Campaign supports the expansion and renovation of the ECs at Falmouth Hospital and Cape Cod Hospital. The ECs are designed to enhance the healthcare experience for the more than 133,000 total patients treated at the ECs each year, and will feature welcoming, spacious, patient-centered spaces with the latest technology.
The Falmouth Hospital EC was last updated in 1998 to handle 25,000 annual visits. In 2012, patient volume exceeded 41,000. The expansion and renovation plan will add 10,000 square feet of new space, increasing the size to 24,000 square feet, with a total of 40 patient care treatment areas.
The Cape Cod Hospital Emergency Center was last renovated in 1993 to accommodate 55,000 patients annually. In 2012, patient volume hit a record of 92,100. The proposed expansion will add approximately 25,000 square feet of new space, increasing the size to 54,000 square feet, with a total of 72 patient care treatment rooms.
The total cost of the EC expansion and renovation projects at Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth Hospital is $36.4 million. Both projects are scheduled to be completed in 2015.
