Open-Heart Surgery Tenth Anniversary Recognized at Cape Cod Hospital

Ten years ago, in August of 2002, the first cardiac surgery procedure was performed at Cape Cod Hospital. Earlier that year, the hospital was one of only three new community hospital based programs in Massachusetts licensed to perform open-heart surgery.
The licensing of cardiac surgery program involved many improvements to Cape Cod Hospital, in areas ranging from clinical protocols and facilities, to staff and technologies needed to support this program. In effect, the rising tide of cardiac surgery lifted the entire health care system, especially cardiovascular services.
Cape Cod Hospital is pleased to recognize the tenth anniversary of this critical program.
The first patient on that August day in 2002 had quadruple bypass surgery and recovered successfully. Since that time, over the course of the past 10 years, Cape Cod Healthcare has built one of the strongest cardiovascular care programs in the state, and in the nation. The program is affiliated with the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. "We’ve literally gone from people choosing to leave Cape Cod for cardiac care, to a center of clinical excellence with outcomes as good as anywhere," said Cape Cod Healthcare’s President and CEO Michael Lauf. "Our cardiovascular program has been consistently recognized for exceptional care by organizations such as the American College of Cardiology; The Delta Group’s CareChex® rating system; and the Massachusetts DPH. The strength of our cardiovascular program played a large part in CCHC being named one of America’s Top Ten health care systems last year. The ten-year anniversary of the cardiac surgery represents a good time to recognize and celebrate an important milestone and reflect on the great work that led to this point for cardiovascular care at CCHC."
Many of the nearly 2,000 cardiac surgery cases were more complex – especially in recent years – and involved patients with co-morbidities. In addition to Coronary artery bypass grafting surgery, CCH performs valve repairs and replacements, aorta surgery for ascending as well as descending procedures such as endovascular stent grafting, repair of congenital defects, arrhythmia correction surgery and repair of cardiac ruptures or perforations.
The cardiac surgery program is a testament to the original promise of Cape Cod Healthcare upon its creation as a system 15 years ago – that coordination and collaboration among physicians and health facilities on the Cape would bring new programs and new levels of service to this region.
"Because of this program, as well as major advancements in interventional cardiology, electrophysiology and interventional radiology," Mike Lauf said, "thousands of Cape residents have no longer had to endure long, inconvenient rides to Boston for heart care. Our team is well-trained, talented, experienced and well-equipped to handle all cardiac-related issues."
