Family Birthplace at Falmouth Hospital

Falmouth Hospital features “Family-Centered Care” maternity units, offering Labor, Delivery, Recovery and Postpartum (LDRP) suites. This means that mothers will labor, deliver, recover and have their postpartum stays in the same room. It also means that the family will be treated as a unit and that the baby will remain with the family, in the room, provided there are no complications. Your partner is also encouraged to stay and take an active role in the care of the mother and the baby. One nurse is assigned responsibility for mother-baby care.

Vision

This concept is new to many people who may be used to a nursery setting within a hospital maternity unit. However, the “family-centered care” offered in the Family Birthplace at Falmouth Hospital is now the standard of care at most hospitals. It is also consistent with Cape Cod Healthcare’s vision of being the health service provider of choice for Cape Cod residents and visitors by achieving and maintaining the highest standards in health care delivery and quality.

The Rooms

Each LDRP room has a private bathroom with shower, cable TV, recliner and rocking chair. A bed can also be brought in for the partner. The rooms are nicely designed and decorated to offer a homelike setting for expectant parents.

The Care

The family is treated as a unit and the baby remains with the family, in the room, provided there are no complications. The mother-baby nurse is therefore able to closely observe newborns without separating them from their parents. Your partner – spouse, parent, grandparent, other relative or friend – can stay as long as necessary and learn as much as he or she wants to learn about taking good care of the baby.
