Interventional Radiology

At Cape Cod Healthcare, our multidisciplinary team of healthcare providers, who have access to the latest technology, offers you a full range of therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Minimally Invasive, Image-Guided Procedures

Our interventional radiologists use minimally invasive techniques to diagnose and treat many conditions that previously required surgery. Our advantage is the ability to use advanced imaging technology, x-ray fluoroscopy, computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound to provide the latest in interventional therapies.

Your interventional radiologist will work closely with your physician and has the support of a team of dedicated and highly trained staff, including registered nurses, radiologic technologists, physician assistants, clinical coordinators and more.

Faster Recovery

Specialists in interventional radiology use imaging to guide catheters and miniaturized instruments through the blood vessels instead of making large incisions in the body. Patients benefit from less risk, pain and scarring, reduced infection rates and a quicker return to regular activities.

Depending on your medical history and specific ailment, you may be a candidate for an interventional radiology (IR) procedure. These minimally invasive techniques are excellent options for conditions such as:

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Stroke
  • Cancer
  • Bile duct obstructions
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Biopsies

During IR procedures, you’ll receive effective, targeted treatments for your specific situation while experiencing less pain and shorter recovery time compared to traditional surgery.

Microwave Ablation

The latest in tumor treatment, Microwave Ablation is a fast, precise method that is not only minimally invasive but is often performed as a same-day procedure.

Using imaging guidance, the physician places a needle electrode through the skin into a tumor. High-frequency electrical currents are passed through the electrode, creating heat that destroys the cancer cells. The process takes about between 1-2 hours, with only 5-10 minutes of active microwave ablation time.

Microwave Ablation has proven to be an effective treatment option for patients who might have difficulty with surgery, offering a more direct approach for treating primary or metastatic tumors in the liver, lungs, kidneys and bones.

Together with lung cancer screening, microwave ablation can help in treating early stages of lung cancer with less invasive procedures.
