Early detection saves lives

It is estimated that 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop breast cancer during her lifetime. Other than skin cancer, it is the most common cancer among women, accounting for nearly 1 in 3 cancers diagnosed in US women. Men are generally at low risk for developing breast cancer; however, they should report any change in their breasts to a physician. Transgender individuals are also at risk for developing breast cancer and should discuss genetic testing and breast cancer screening options with their health care provider.

Detecting breast cancer early when it is the most treatable is key. Proactive steps, including staying current with recommended screening, understanding one’s risk factors, practicing breast self-awareness and making healthy lifestyle choices when it comes to nutrition, exercise, weight management and alcohol use, are all important aspects of breast health.
