OsteoCool Radiofrequency Ablation
Cape Cod Healthcare’s spine specialists – our expert neurosurgeons – use the latest in technology to offer relief to patients who have spine pain due to cancer metastases.
OsteoCool Radiofrequency Ablation (RF) is a procedure that uses alternating, low-power current, directed through a probe, which heats and destroys spinal tumors. During this minimally invasive procedure, this heated probe, in combination with a second probe directing water to the site, kills cancerous cells, while preserving healthy tissue.
Locating the source
Prior to the procedure, the patient undergoes an x-ray, CT scan or MRI to identify the vertebrae causing pain.
A minimally invasive treatment
The patient is sedated and two small incisions are made along the spine. OsteoCool RF Ablation is typically offered as a same-day treatment, as the probes are inserted for only 6.5-15 minutes per vertebrae.
Treating pain and instability in vertebrae
In patients who are suffering from vertebral compression fractures, a stabilizing compound can be administered through the probe to reinforce the bone.
By providing this leading-edge technology, Cape Cod Healthcare’s expert neurosurgeons can perform precise, minimally invasive treatment for spinal pain, enhancing the quality of life for many patients.
