Patient Service Tech (Phlebotomist) Trainee Apprenticeship

Our Patient Service Tech Trainee Apprenticeship is an opportunity for someone interested in starting a career as a phlebotomist with no prior experience or training. After your apprenticeship, you will be fully equipped to carry out the phlebotomy process, from registration of patients to drawing blood and processing specimens.

Cape Cod Healthcare is pleased to offer this new will-train opportunity for entry-level Patient Service Techs within our Cape Cod Healthcare Laboratory Services Department. This program is designed to welcome interested candidates to fill a CLAB phlebotomy position. Tuition will be fully covered by Service Employees International Union (SEIU) / Training and Upgrading Fund (TUF), leaving participants with virtually zero out-of-pocket expenses.

How it Works

  • Once hired, didactic/classroom training will be provided to Apprentices by CLAB leadership in conjunction with an accredited phlebotomy program (online or in-person). Apprentices are also assigned a specific CLAB mentor during their time in training.
  • Apprentices work with CLAB supervisors during their training period to determine which 30 to 40-hour full-time position will be the best fit following the completion of their apprenticeship.
  • Apprentices are regular employees and will be considered probationary employees until the individual successfully completes this program and moves into a regular PST position for Lab Services.  
  • Upon completion of the program, apprentices are eligible to become ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) certified.
  • No prior experience or medical background required! 


What’s Included

  • Classroom curriculum with an accredited phlebotomy program. (Online or in-person)
  • On-the-job training including medical terminology (taught during classroom and on-the-training)
  • Each apprentice will be assigned a specific CLAB mentor or mentors.
  • Upon successful completion of the PST Apprenticeship, our team members will transfer into a higher level PST (Phlebotomist) pay grade (6).

Who Qualifies

  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
  • High school diploma or equivalent education.
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License upon hire. Must obtain Massachusetts State Driver’s License within 60 days of hire.
  • Successful completion of a basic phlebotomy program with classroom instruction and practical hours within 12 months.
  • Acceptable driving record in accordance with the Motor Vehicle Records (MVR) criteria (will be obtained as a precondition to begin employment).
  • Successfully complete CCHC Laboratories’ Driver Safety Training Program (and every 2 years thereafter).
  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred. 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and basic keyboarding skills preferred.
