Structural Heart Services
Structural heart disease is caused by a defect or disorder in the heart’s structure, such as the valves. A heart problem that is structural may be congenital, meaning it is present at birth, or it may develop later in life as the result of aging or underlying disease.
The field of structural heart disease continues to rapidly evolve, incorporating less invasive, catheter-based therapies for valvular disease in addition to surgical repair and replacement as options for our patients. With emerging procedures like WATCHMAN™, our structural heart teams offer advanced cardiac treatment as an alternative to traditional blood thinners.
Following the guidelines established by the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association for the Management of Patients with Valvular Heart Disease, Cape Cod Hospital has assembled all interventional, surgical, imaging and institutional requirements to be considered a Comprehensive Valve Center for treating patients with structural heart disease, including a Multidisciplinary Heart Valve Team (MHT) of cardiovascular specialists.
Multidisciplinary Heart Valve Team
Our MHT physicians specialize in interventional cardiology, cardiac surgery, electrophysiology, cardiac imaging and interventional radiology. This team thoroughly evaluates every structural heart disease patient as an individual, utilizing advanced imaging technology, then partners with the patient, his or her family and a patient’s primary care provider to discuss the best treatment options for that patient following a shared decision-making model.
Better Outcomes for Our Community
Through the Structural Heart Services available at Cape Cod Hospital, hundreds of patients on Cape Cod benefit from the innovative technology available here annually to treat their valvular disease.
