Geriatric Medicine

Geriatric medicine is devoted to managing the health of older adults. At Cape Cod Healthcare, you can choose from physicians (called geriatricians) and advanced practice professionals, such as nurse practitioners and physician assistants, with special training in geriatric medicine.

Geriatricians frequently provide primary care for older adults whose age-related problems require special attention. These complications include falls, incontinence, cerebrovascular disease, dementia and other medical and cognitive impairments.

Reasons to consult a geriatrician

A geriatric medicine specialist can be especially helpful when:

  • An older adult has a medical or cognitive condition that causes considerable impairment or could lead to accidents or infection
  • An older adult has a number of diseases and/or disabilities
  • You or other caregivers are experiencing significant stress and strain
