Minimally Invasive Approaches
Many urologic procedures are done using less invasive approaches or techniques that eliminate the need for surgery. Laser treatments and laparoscopic surgery are options available for a variety of conditions. Their use can minimize pain and recovery time for many patients.
For kidney stone treatment, physicians perform extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), a laser treatment, using shock waves to pulverize the kidney stone and break it into tiny sand-like particles that pass with urine.
Other laser treatments include Greenlight Laser, a minimally invasive treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia, and Holmium Laser, an option for those diagnosed with prostate enlargement.
Endoscopy and Laparoscopy are minimally invasive methods to diagnose and surgically treat some urological conditions, including kidney stones and bladder cancer. This surgical technique involves a small incision and the use of an endoscope or laparoscope, a thin, tube-like instrument with a light and a lens for viewing. It also has the ability to remove tissue that may be checked under a microscope for signs of disease.
We also provide robotic-assisted surgery, using the daVinci® Robotic-Assisted Surgery System.
Prostate MRI and MRI Fusion Prostate Biopsy
Cape Cod Healthcare, along with Shields MRI, offers the latest in prostate diagnosis and treatment – the Multi-parametric Prostate MRI. This screening tool combines three powerful imaging approaches to detect abnormalities within the prostate gland.
Prostate MRI is used to see localized prostate lesions, to stage tumors for cancer diagnosis, to monitor abnormalities and to detect a recurrence of disease.
The value of this MRI goes far beyond screening and monitoring -- it is also used for greater accuracy in biopsy. MRI Fusion Prostate Biopsy provides enhanced imaging of the whole prostate, compared to tradition methods in which the whole prostate can’t be seen. Because of the MRI’s better resolution, the biopsy needle is able to precisely target a questionable area.
Used with the UroNav Fusion Biopsy System [pdf], this targeted MRI brings a precision and accuracy to prostate biopsy that is unmatched. Poised to become the new standard in prostate care, we offer this procedure today.
The Journal of the American Medical Association’s recent study of MR/Fusion-Guided Biopsy found this advanced treatment was associated with increased detection of high-risk prostate cancer.
