Treatment for Opioid Use
Cape Cod Healthcare is committed to providing specialized and safe care for mothers seeking addiction support and for infants and families affected by Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome.
Proactive Education and Support
Our integrated team of obstetricians, midwives, nurses, social workers, pediatric hospitalists and maternity staff collaborate to engage high-risk mothers with opioid addiction early in their pregnancy. This proactive approach helps addicted mothers provide a healthy and safe start for their babies, as well as receive medication assisted treatment and recovery support for themselves.
This may include:
- A pre-natal tour of maternity
- Educating about what the process will be like for both the mother and the infant experiencing withdrawal
- Reinforcing the importance of regular prenatal visits
In 2016, Cape Cod Hospital was designated as a Center of Excellence in Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome Education and Training by the Vermont Oxford Network, which is awarded to health centers who meet a goal of standardized education and training for staff.
Moms Do Care Project
Funded by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, the Moms Do Care program supports pregnant women on their journey from addiction to recovery. Services are provided for moms by moms who have walked this path during their own pregnancy. This program is free and offered through Duffy Health Center. Cape Cod Healthcare is a collaborative partner on this project.
How Moms Do Care Can Help
- Access treatment for addiction or support if you are in recovery
- Provide limited transportation to key appointments, provide bus passes and/or help with medical appointment rides
- Connect you to resources such as WIC, A Baby Center, the Family Resource Center, and housing and transportation resources
- Schedule a tour of the hospital maternity department to prepare for your baby’s birth and help you find a pediatrician for your baby
- Provide peer support in your work with the Department of Children and Families and the Department of Transitional Assistance
- Connect you to a primary care doctor, counselors or any other health care services you need before and after you deliver
- Help you build a recovery support system for you and your family
Who Can Enroll in Moms Do Care?
A pregnant woman may be able to enroll in this program if she:
- Is 18 or older
- Has used heroin or any prescription opioid without a prescription, or in greater amounts that prescribed, in the past 12 months
- Would like help getting substance use treatment
Women who sign up for the project will complete an interview to determine their needs and create a personalized service plan.
