Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative
In September 2022, Cape Cod Hospital was recognized as a Baby-Friendly hospital, by Baby-Friendly USA, due to it’s its ongoing efforts to educate families on infant feeding best practices. In 2016, The Family Birthplace at Cape Cod Hospital began the process of earning the Baby-Friendly Hospital designation. Our team includes nurses, midwives, lactation consultants, obstetricians, pediatricians, interpreters, and support staff who work collaboratively to deliver Baby-Friendly policies.
Cape Cod Hospital now joins the approximately 600 Baby-Friendly facilities across the country.
What is the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative?
Launched in 1991 by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer mothers the information, confidence and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies, as the optimal feeding and caring method for both the baby and the mother. Baby Friendly facilities are centers of support in which evidenced based care is provided, education is free from commercial interest, all infant feeding options are possible and individual preferences are respected.
How does a hospital earn Baby-Friendly designation?
For a hospital to be considered for a Baby-Friendly designation, they must fully comply with the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding - evidence-based practices that have been shown to increase breastfeeding initiation and duration. Systems must also implement and follow The International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes – a framework that defines how hospitals may obtain formula.
By providing access to this evidenced-based information, The Family Birthplace offers a supportive environment that respects a mother’s personal feeding decision.

Why is breastfeeding important?
Exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months provides the nurturing, nutrients and energy needed for physical and neurological growth and development. Beyond 6 months, breastfeeding continues to provide energy and high-quality nutrients that, jointly with safe and adequate complementary feeding, help prevent hunger, malnutrition, and obesity.
