Laborists: Dedicated Specialists in Labor and Delivery
Cape Cod Healthcare recently expanded its obstetrics and maternity program at The Family Birthplace at Cape Cod Hospital to include a more patient-centered approach by ensuring a 24/7, onsite physician presence on the labor and delivery unit. This is known as a laborist model for patient care.
A laborist is an experienced, board-certified or board-eligible obstetrician/gynecologist (OB/GYN) focused on the care of women in labor and delivery of babies. A laborist is on-site at the hospital at all times and available to examine incoming patients, evaluate the progress of labor and provide a safe delivery, managing complications and emergencies should they arise. The development of the laborist model is supported by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists as an approach that enhances patient safety and leads to better outcomes for mother and baby.
At Cape Cod Healthcare, we have seen an increase in the acuity of our mother’s expecting and giving birth. This trend has continued for years and this has been the reason we wanted to have a full-time physician presence at The Family Birthplace. Cape Cod Healthcare’s laborists bring an added level of safety and support for mothers and their babies.
A Collaborative Effort
On-site labor and delivery care at The Family Birthplace is provided 24/7 by a team of skilled certified-nurse midwives and laborists. Working together, these highly-trained midwives and physicians assure that all mothers receive the appropriate level of care given their unique set of circumstances.
We are so fortunate to have outstanding midwives that complement our OB physicians. Today, The Family Birthplace team at Cape Cod Healthcare includes 11 obstetricians and 6 certified nurse-midwives, an exceptionally robust team for the Cape Cod community.
